Rainy Season in Guatemala
Yep! That image is a rainy season morning here on Lake Atitlan. Lately, I've been answering questions about whether or not people should change their upcoming trip because they are now researching and noticing its currently rainy season. Let me break it down for you:
- Rainy season is roughly from May to November and is characterized with clear mornings like this with rain rolling up in the afternoon. EVERY afternoon.
- Rainy season is almost guarantee to rain, but everything is lush, green, lively. photos of the landscape are unmatched with anywhere else in the world.
- During rainy season you could get one full week of rain. that's usually "predictable" and happens when there is a storm in the Caribbean or Florida.
- Dry season is almost guaranteed no rain, but here in the Western Highlands everything is brown. Just not as lush. So you forgo rain, but your photography and landscape are also compromised.
- Dry season might not have the rain, but you could experience a week of full blanket haze that covers all the volcanos. Having no rain does not guarantee a perfect view.
So when is the best time to travel and should you avoid rainy season?
- To make it simple.... like anywhere else in the world, you CAN NOT predict the weather on your vacation.
- To make you comfortable tourists are here all year round - even during rainy season!
- To make you tempted, Guatemala is called the land of eternal spring, because we are blessed with “perfect” temperatures and natural blossoms all year round.
- To give you the right answer if you've read this far. And if you can control your timeline. the BEST TIME to visit Guatemala weather-wise is December/January. Things are still lush from wet season but the rain is gone. The wind picks up to also blow the clouds away from obstructing volcano views.
